Russell R. Klug, age 84, passed away on Saturday January 27, 2024, at Crossroads Care Center in Weyauwega. Russ was born on January 4, 1940, at home in Weyauwega to Ralph and Bernice (Peskie) Klug. He graduated from Weyauwega-Fremont High School in May 1958. After graduation, Russ enlisted in the Army and went to basic training at Fort Hood. After basic, he was briefly stationed at Fort McKinley before being deployed as a member of the 101st airborne to Germany from 1958 to 1962. Russ returned home where he had a short stint at Appleton Coated before joining Miller Electric in Appleton, WI.
On July 22, 1972, Russ married Sally (Nusz) Klug and had 3 children: Luke, Micah, and Jeremiah. Russ and Sally raised the boys in their home on Partridge Crop off the Wolf River. Though they eventually separated, Russ and Sally stayed close right up to Russ's passing.
Russ loved all sports, he was dedicated and had a will to win. This garnered him the nickname "Cocky" as he was very confident and never shied away from a challenge. He ran track, cross country, played football, basketball and played on multiple softball leagues throughout the years. Russ achieved many accolades during his sporting career. With family by his side, he was enshrined in the Weyauwega-Fremont Athletic HOF on November 11, 2017.
In addition to sports, Russ loved to fish. Together with Daniel Thiel, they built a walleye raft (Riff Raft). Together (along with their boys for extra poles!) they caught many stringers of walleyes.
Russ retired from Miller Electric in 1996 after 34 years of service. From there he helped his brother Gary at the local Party Shop in Weyauwega. He would bring the customers in with his gift of gab.
Russ is survived by his children: Luke Klug, Micah Klug, and Jeremiah Klug; grandchildren: Kalyn Klug, Gabriel Klug, and William Klug; brother, Gary (Gloria) Klug; cousins: Linda Klug, Mary (Greg) Oehlke, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Bernice Klug; niece, Kim Pope; lifelong friend, Daniel Thiel.
Special thanks to the nursing staff of Theda Care Hospice Care and Crossroads Care Center in Weyauwega for keeping Russ comfortable and providing conversation and care during his stay. Special acknowledgement to his dear friend Danny Wilson who was a daily visitor until the day of his passing. To Danny: Russ truly cherished every moment you two shared together. "Therefore, you too have grief now; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you." - John 16:22
